Birding is great all year round here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but what you'll see changes based on the season. Here is what to expect in each season.

Spring:

Warming temperatures means it's time for warblers to return and breeding season to begin. Because we are so high in elevation, lots of warblers and other songbirds that normally breed far to the north can be found nesting right here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Keep an eye out for Blackburnian Warblers, Winter Wrens, Hermit Thrushes, Ruffed Grouse, Veery, Blackpool Warblers, Golden-winged Warblers, Black-throated Blue Warblers, Black-throated Green Warblers, and many more!

Summer:

As more and more wildflowers start to bloom and baby birds fledge, all sorts of species can be spotted here in the High Country. Keep an eye out for Canada Warblers, Field Sparrows, Grasshopper Sparrows, Brown Creepers, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Least, Willow, and Acadian Flycatchers, Peregrine Falcons, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Hairy Woodpeckers and many more!

Fall:

It is migration season! Thousands of hawks stream down the mountains on their way to South America. Huge numbers of warblers and other birds are also moving south, and incredible mixed flocks can be found moving through the forests. Keep an eye out for thousands of Broad-winged Hawks, and huge flocks of all sorts of mixed warblers!

Winter:

Winter is our slowest birding season, but a surprising number of birds stick out the cold winter months here in the High Country, including occasional visitors from the far north! Keep an eye out for Brown Creepers, Winter Wrens, Eastern Screech-Owls, Wilson’s Snipe, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, plus occasional vagrant waterfowl including Ross’s Geese and Canvasbacks!
