Où allons-nous...

This tour explores two remarkable Costa Rican wetlands as well as spectacular volcanic peaks and Cloud Forests. We start in the mountains of Bajos del Toro, where we will visit the Catarata del Toro - where the Toro River cascades 270 feet into the caldera of an extinct volcano!

From here we explore the massive wetlands of Cano Negro. Considered one of the most important wetlands on the planet, this region in the far north of Costa Rica is home to huge numbers of wading birds - including Jabirus and Agami Herons - as well as hundreds of other species. Because of the aquatic nature of the habitat our tours here will be by small boat with an expert local guide.

Our next stop is Bijagua de Upala, where we will explore Volcano Tenorio National Park as well as the private Tapir Valley Nature Reserve. The minerals in the soil here make the Rio Celeste a stunning turquoise blue color.

The tour ends on the Tarcoles River, which is home to a large population of giant American Crocodiles as well as a large Mangrove Forest home to several Mangrove endemic species of birds. We will explore the River and Mangroves by boat before watching the sunset from a birding tower located at our last eco lodge.

This tour will be focused on birding, but there will also be plenty of chances to see sloths, monkeys, frogs, snakes, invertebrates, and much more! Your expert trip leaders Paul & Amanda are always available for extra early morning bird walks or impromptu night hikes. Seeing 300+ species of birds would not be unexpected.
