This tour takes you to a remarkable range of habitats in the north-east Caribbean slope of Costa Rica. We begin in the foothills of the Talamanca Mountains. Warm, moist air from the Caribbean Lowlands is forced up by the massive mountain range, causing it to rapidly cool and dump a staggering 30 feet of rain per year in some places. The amount of moisture means the rainforest here is covered in a thick layer of epiphytes and is home to incredible varieties of tanagers, hummingbirds, toucans, and much more!

Our next stop is further north in Boca Tapada. The river and lagoons here are known for incredible diversities of wading birds, kingfishers, hawks and vultures. The rainforests that border the waterways have their own varieties of birds and other wildlife to search for.

The tour concludes in the mountainous Cloud Forests of Bajos del Toro, where we will visit the Catarata del Toro - where the Toro River cascades 270 feet into the caldera of an extinct volcano!

This tour will be focused on birding, but there will also be plenty of chances to see sloths, monkeys, frogs, snakes, invertebrates, and much more! Your expert trip leaders Paul & Amanda are always available for extra early morning bird walks or impromptu night hikes. Seeing 200+ species of birds would not be unexpected.
